Battlefield 3

Post by Maximus »

What am I missing? Does it live up to the hype?
Not playing anything now; work is pretty busy. We'll see what happens when the Radeon 7000's land around the end of the year.

I have to admit, it's a pretty decent game. This is coming from someone who has basically played everything there is to play in terms of battlefield games, which actually gives me a negative bias right now. There are improvements from the pile of excrement better known as BC2 but it makes a lot of the same mistakes.

Basically, this game is good if you don't want to play it in ladder matches or in any sort of competitive fashion. There's a lot of polish in many areas. Battlelog can be a bit annoying but they've made up for it by allowing you to customise your weapon accessories and loadout, not only for infantry but for vehicles as well, which is pretty awesome. Almost all unlocks in this game that allow you to do fancy things with vehicles and weapons are obtained by using the thing you want unlocks for; I.e. using an attack type chopper gradually unlocks useful customisations for the attack choppers, using the lando type choppers unlocks stuff for the lando type choppers. Weapons are the same, in order to get grips, specialised sights, ammo types and other things for say the UMP45 or the 870 MCS, you need to yews that specific weapon. No other weapon will give you the unlocks for that.

Graphically, this game is probably the best looking PC FPS game bar none right now. It looks and feels absolutely fantastic. The animations in this game are spot on, the movement of your own soldier is virtually perfect from your perspective (diving into the prone position, A+) and movements of others look exactly like they should.

There are some issues with crashing and a bit of lag but overall these are pretty few and far between. I'd expect a patch to come any day now to fix that up. There's a lot missing from this game that should be standard for a FPS series that has been focussed heavily on multiplayer (BF2 didn't even have a singleplayer) but, again, if you're not playing this competitively you probably won't even notice that they aren't there. Also, EA's new 'must have to play this game' program, Origin, really annoys me. EA like being complete fuckwits to their customers though, so it's nothing new.

See image for truth:

Despite all the shit EA has lumped with it though, the game is still good enough to buy.

Oh, I forgot... Don't buy this game for singleplayer, unless you want to be disappointed. Not sure why anyone would buy a BF game for SP anyway but thought I'd put it out there.

I don't like new shooters. It's harder to differentiate enemies from teammates/scenery/whatever.

I really enjoyed the immediate response of being able to identify a person from the background. Realism can blow me. Every time I play a shooter now I have to rely sole upon the enemy actively moving/shooting to be able to identify them reasonably quickly.
Hi. I'm angry on the internet.

Steam does a similar thing, but on an opt-in basis. http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey
Also Punkbuster which the entire Battlefield series uses has always scanned your PC's running processes to look for hacks.
Nothing is going to change about ever-increasing privacy intrusion unless a significant percentage of the potential consumers boycott the product, which isn't likely to happen.

Yea, it can be difficult. Battlefield makes it especially so but there are things you can do, such as equipping the IRNV scope, which makes people stand out like a sore thumb, or just pressing the spot button every now and again if you're playing in a non-HC server. You adjust to it eventually though. I mean, when you think about it, people usually camp on ridge lines, next to rocks or under bushes, so it kind of narrows down where you need to look but not always.

I don't mind punkbuster, it has a function and the only information it ever really 'collects' is a screenshot of your game which has to be done manually by a server admin as far as I know. I remember battlefield 1942 before punkbuster, people were just able to pull out tsearch and give themselves a map hack. As for Origin, the process is a little less transparent. It isn't clear what information they've limited themselves to collecting or for what purposes they're collecting it. It doesn't actually serve any useful function and delays the launch time of the game by launching itself first before you play. All in all, it's only there to annoy customers which is why I'm kind of glad EA won't trump CoD for sales. I also don't understand it. Yes, people will be forced to yews it for multiplayer games like BF3 but what about games that are only really played for SP, won't that just encourage piracy? I know for certain I run Origin only when I play BF3. If I had a SP game made by EA that had to run Origin, I'd simply find a crack for it. Or I'd go the way I have with ubisoft. Haven't purchased a single game from them since they implemented their constant connection DRM. I don't understand why I need to be punished for actually buying their game when, if I had pirated it, I wouldn't need to put up with that shit.

I got my money back as soon as a combat flashlight on a 9mm blinded me from across the map during daytime. Killed my interest fast.

I never spent money on it as soon as I realized it was like every war FPS in the last 6 years.

Got it for half price on Black Friday. Rank 14 in a week.
Overall I like it. Sure there's the usual choke point spam, and the occasional hacker, but in general it's fun to play.
It's nice to see a lot of teamwork put into the game. You get points for pretty much anything that helps your team, not just kills. It's not uncommon to see the top scorer in a 64p game be 2K/5D, with a score based on almost entirely revives/healing.
Having the server browser in a web browser was an interesting change. Not sure if I like it but it seems to work ok.
I can see it being really fun if you play with friends on a squad or as part of a larger team. It's easy to get lost in the shuffle on a large team of random people, but the majority are pretty team oriented.
