Water filters, scratch-resistant coatings, kidney dialysis, CAT/MRI scanners, blow-molding, Dynamat, freeze-dried food, cordless power tools....just to name a few.

BUT, the first 'microwave oven' was invented in 1947 and NASA wasn't created until 1958.

The microwave oven is based on radar technology developed during WWII.

Apollo 13 is an awesome movie.

I like to watch it while on my memory foam mattress.

I have a few friends who work at SpaceX, the recent launch was quite exciting to say the least, and I hope it renews the US's interest in space.

That being said, I thought about it more, and just because of our actions to the space program doesn't mean we stopped dreaming. It was one of the MANY outlets this country has for innovation. To make a claim so bold as we stopped dreaming because of that is actually almost arrogant and takes away the credibility of that group trying to renew the space program in my opinion...

I see your point. What Dr. Tyson may have been referring to is the fact that math and science isn't our forte anymore, not like it used to be when the advent of the space program made those fields important.

Hm, fair enough. As cool as it is that we are making initiatives to further increase participation in STEM programs, I guess now that I think about it we shouldn't NEED to try so hard to push people towards them...
