I actually tried to be a local police officer a few years back.

I have a bad eye, so I knew I probably wouldn't get it anyway, but I thought...WTF.

I'm pretty sure they told me I had the best time on the obstacle course:

Run, climb wall, run through barrels, another wall, through a concrete drain thing, across a log(utility pole) bridge, drag 170lbs dummy 50ft, SPRINT 75 yards, push a police cruiser 25ft, and, finally, act as if you're aiming and firing at a target with an unloaded revolver...pulling the trigger exactly six times.

Can't remember the time, but I remember them posting the results.

I scored 3rd on the written portion which was really just a bunch of memory recall things like suspect descriptions and looking at mug shots and stuff.

I did pretty bad at the next part...the interview in front of the city council and commanding officers.

I have never taken any Criminal Justice courses and most of the questions were related to that.

After it was all done and they told me the two positions had been filled, I went to the Chief and asked why I didn't get the job. He said it was because the two people they hired had previous military experience.

So, in the end, I did well and I learned that they didn't pass on me because of the horrible interview...lol

It's always good to go back and ask WHY? when you interview for a job and they don't hire you.

I think it depends on the job you are applying for. I can't count how many times I have heard "there was a lot of competition and there were more qualified people than you" after a failed interview. Would have been nice to have gotten specifics (what they had over me, what I might have needed to set me apart, etc)
