soccer coach

Should I go get a second degree (dual) and eventually become a science teacher and soccer coach? I have a passion for science and soccer . I want to be able to do both. I am wonder what qualifications I have to do. I live in Atlanta, GA and a friend of mine said he just got certifications by taking the second exam and all I need is a degree. I have my MIS Degree, but it sucks and its boring to me. Good degree but not for me. I always been an athelete and MIS is for desk jobs. I need a little more interactive play. So what should I do. Go back to school and get a teachers certification or a degree for sports. Or should I try and study the exit exam and coach club soccer like I was intending on doing and dont worry about getting the fitness/sports degree. I know i can easily get 3.5 gpa. And will it transfer my other credits or what? Please help.

I think the exam your friend referred to may have been the Praxis II (subject-based tests).

I have a degree in physics, and it's pretty much another 2 years of postgrad work (at the undergrad level) to get certified to teach. There are temporary ways around this, such as Teach for America or substitute teaching, but in the end, sooner or later you'll need some sort of approved teacher certification program.

It does, however, depend on the certification regulations at your state's Dept. of Education. Every state has different kinds, and quantities, of alternative certification programs for students who already have a degree (though I'm not sure if you can teach with the degree you currently have). I remember one in urban St. Louis which basically paid your way through a certification while working in a teaching apprenticeship, and then when you were done you owed them back some years of service in their urban public school system. Definitely look at the Georgia DoE's website to see what options are available for you.

I do know a few math or history majors who are minoring in kinesiology so they can coach as well as teach. You don't necessarily need a dual degree to coach; one of my cooperating teachers at the school taught biology while coaching basketball, and he didn't need a dual degree. So just a major and a minor would probably suffice.

Are you looking to get a science degree of sorts, or just certification with your current degree? Obviously chemistry, biology, and physics are the three mainstream science fields for teaching, so there's an important choice to make there.
