They were usually words I found interesting and looked up. Over time you just end up having a very long list of synonyms floating around in your brain.
Which is useful when you have to write things quickly for uni/school/exams/etc and you want to avoid repeating certain words or passages. Although sometimes you get less than intelligent markers that think uncommon words like 'evinced' are misspellings of other common words such as 'evidenced'.
By using longer words, I'm subtly helping you to get a great mark in your English exams at the end of Year 12.
