No, I installed TF2. I still can't add friends. You have to actually pay to add friends. It's horrid.
Edit: And what else can you do with steam exactly? I know I can load my non-steam games into it so I can launch via the steam window - but what is the point of that? My desktop icons already do that fine. As far as chatting, xfire seems to suffice and be the first choice by most people (unless they're buying games off steam.) Just curious what else you can do with it that I don't know about it.

Yes. I have Steam. The normal Steam. The normal Steam everyone has. When I click "Add a Friend" I get a generic message about how I need to "Add games to my library to add friends."
But I already have TF2, BlackMesa, CSS (not activated) and the Source SDK installed.
So why can't I add friends?
