jka crashes when trying to join any server

hiho, havent posted here in a long while

Just bought new cpu, read some forums and came to the conclusion that the error might be in my video card or something(?). Got AMD Radeon HD 6520G dual graphics card. It just simply crashes, not when starting the game up, but when im trying to join a server. Any help would be appreciated since this same error happens in some other games aswell.

Is it just a crash to desktop, or is there an error message that goes along with the crash?

Inability to connect to a game server leads me to believe its one of these:
Firewall
Run in WinXP compatibility mode (SP3)
if you've installed recently don't forget to patch up to 1.01

Install any new mods lately? Could be a conflict or something. You might try cleaning our your base folder and then adding everything back in a few pk3s at a time to see if there are any conflicts.

6520G means you have a Llano. You also said "dual"; if it's really discrete+integrated GPUs then make sure you're running the drivers from the manufacturer of your system. Stock drivers may not work well on dual systems.

This is one issue with ATI GPUs and old OpenGL games.

I used the method of putting atioglxx.dll from Catalyst 10.4 in the same directory with jamp.exe. I haven't seen the renaming the executable to quake3.exe mentioned before but you can try it.

As always, monitor temps etc... AMD Overdrive should do this.
If you are under Vista/7 you are running as administrator right?
How well do other games run? Particularly any OpenGL games?

Since you mention in crashes on server join, it could be a corrupted install, CD-check issues (CD/mini iso/Steam), map version mismatch, not having the 1.01 patch, mod/pk3 conflicts, or network issues.

Try a fresh install with nothing but the 1.01 patch, and join a basejka server (no mods).

But, ya....need more info on the actual details of the crash/error to help much more.

A firewall shouldn't cause the game to crash. I would think that it would simply make it say 'Awaiting Connection' or whatever it says...but, I've seen weirder things.

If the game only crashes when connecting to server, that tells me that either your 3D drivers/OpenGL are bad/incompatible or some file is corrupt...and, ya...that's basically what Bob said.
