Because it is illegal to ride your bike on the sidewalk! How hard is that to comprehend. Might as well be saying "I dunno why I got arrested for breaking into my neighbors house."

Of course it is illegal in many places in order to protect both pedestrians and cyclists (Some of my closest shaves with cars have been when I've been biking on a sidewalk). However, this isn't an area where its logical to arrest or fine people. To me, it makes sense only as a recomendation for faster cyclists. There is no way a Dad and his kid, a couple thirteen year olds on their bmx's, or an elderly women, should be on the road rather than the sidewalk (Unless there is a bike lane). That these cyclists should be expected to be respectful and yield the right of way to pedestrians is a given Will this always happen? No, but nor can we expect all drivers to be courteous to bikers on the road. We just have to keep educating people and try to minimize the risk involved for both users.
