This summer after my LeBaron died, I bought a 1995 Mustang for $950. It runs awesome, but has 250,000 miles on it - hence the low price. Unfortunately it's only a 3.8l. I've done a couple bolt on additions to give it some extra horsepower, nothing big - but little stuff like a K2 Intake, and threw some headers on it with true dual pipes. It's cat-back so I've got glasspacks on it, all in all I've probably netted around 20-25HP with my little bolt ons. I think I'm going to chip it soon too (though I want to have it painted and get some classic looking chrome rims for it after winter.)

Anyway, I'm going off my original point I was going to make, because it's not much of a pony at all right now (3.8 automatic) I plan on converting it over to a 5.8 351 Windsor, and hooking up some clutch cables for a 5-speed. In 1995 they made 250 Mustang Cobra-Rs which you have to have an NHRA license to even buy, that had a 5.8 351, but you can get the motors pretty cheap now - about $1,600. I'm going to leave my regular Pony emblems on it of course, and make it one hell of a sleeper. Planning to hopefully do this conversion sometime towards the end of the summer, I've got about a third of the cash now - so it depends on what I can get for summer work. Everything should, for the most part, bolt right up.. I've got to chance a few things like my front springs because the motor is heavier, and my ECM, but nothing too major.

You could switch to an electric fan and get about 5-10 HP and get a few extra MPG.

You definitely need to get a chip to really make yews of your headers, intake, exhaust, etc...

When you get the Windsor, you're gonna need to drop the tank and get a beefier fuel pump...

Also, I think you'll need a special oil pan and pickup since Windsors are front-pumpers.

You'll need the right flywheel and a harmonic-balancer as well.

Probably even different motor mounts or a cowl hood because there may be some hood clearance issues.

Your tranny will bolt up, but it may not last long under that kind of power...plan to get one before it goes.

Woah.. pictures is my thing.

I'm converting over to a 5 speed, so I'd have to redo the tranny anyway.
I think the windsor would clear the hood, but if not I might just buy the Cobra R hood that offers extra clearance.
I do need new mounts, but that's nothing huge.
I actually have a list of everything written down at home, but I'm at school and don't have it. My dad worked at a Ford plant for a long time, so it's actually fairly convenient having a relatively knowledgeable Ford expert close at hand.

It's also a belt driven fan, I haven't looked into converting it over to electric but I might look into getting one out of a junkyard 3.8. Lot less drag on the motor so I'd get a little more torque which would be nice, and if I got it out of a junkyard car it'd probably be only like $30 or so, I would think.

As for the chip, I think I'm actually going to get a chip programmer so I can have a few different presets. I mean, everyone wants good fuel mileage, but I sure wouldn't mind being able to slip the thing into "Noisy as hell" mode when pulling up to a WRX at a red light.

My grandpa had some manual ones on his 454 Monte Carlo.....wow.

Btw, the fan kits are not all that expensive, but I bet if you look around on the internet, someone has already figured out which junkyard fans work best. Then you just need a themostat-relay or a toggle switch.

Wow, those are pretty sweet. Not really high priority as my glasspacks are loud & illegal enough for now, but definitely something I'll look into. I read online that any fan out of an early 90's 3.8 Neon will do the trick, shouldn't be hard to find one of those at all.

Nah, that's not something that you really need or want for a 3.8...

My S10 has a 4.3, which is basically a 350 (5.7) with the rear two cylinders cut off.

I took the exhaust off just after the y-pipe (I was repairing the trans) and started it up just to see what it would sound like.....pretty pathetic.

My big truck has a 350 that I just recently rebuilt and it has a short exhaust system (The mufflers are pretty much right under the cab) and it literally rattles your teeth....you can't stand to be in the thing very long.

I used to have a '69 Roadrunner (with a blueprinted 383...cammed, stroked, bored...about 500HP ) and I took the pipes off at the headers for a minute.... I couldn't hear very well for a few minutes....kinda like firing a 45ACP or bigger without hearing protection.



This one looked pretty much like mine, only mine had a big 4BBL( dunno what that car has...looks like two deuces, staggered)...same color, but the windows were DARK (illegal and definitely not stock) It was pretty cool since I always loved the road runner cartoons....and the horn even went MEEP, MEEP.

Fun fact: They had a RAM AIR version that was called the "Coyote Duster." Three Deuces...lol



Sadly, I foolishly sold it....I got about 6k out of it after paying five and today they are worth 20-30k+
